Vacuum cleaners…When it comes to maintaining suction, being leight weight, and low noise level, …?
which upright is best out of the department store brands? (Oreck, bissell, dyson, eureka, etc?) Recommendations should be for less than $500.
oops, that's "light"
for the best suction you can get i would stay away from the uprights and get a Henry i have been a cleaner for 12yrs and have used all the different cleaners you can think of and the best one i have ever used is the Henry

Good Answers. I agree with Bissell and the canister as the best fit for your requirements.

My hubby bought me a bissel upright. And I love it. It is rather quiet. It cleans deep. Very light weight, easy to carry up steps.
But cheap, but in this case cheaper is better.
Here is a link to it..

My all time favorite was a canister type called Rainbow. It used water for the filter and far surpassed all other brands. I could pick up water too which was great for an emergency spot cleaning. The filter was reasonable
and it's design far superior as no contaminants were redeposited in the air like others.
I like bissel and eurika and any unit that has a good hose for reaching along the baseboards and drapes, good filtration and maneuverability.
