I want to purchase a new vacuum cleaner. I want to go bagless. What are some good brands?
I essentially am looking for a carpet/floor upright vaccum cleaner. I was looking around in stores and found a lot of choice however. I notieced the following things about various brands.
1. Bissell = Seems to be the cheapest and offers more features for it's price but looks kind of flimsy. Is this a good brand. Offers 1 yr warranty.
2. Dirt devel = Cost a little more and looks better. Offers 2 yr warranty?
3. Hoover = I know this is a well known brand but all I was able to see was the steamvacs. My mom had one and it's about 4 yrs old. Its very good still cleans up.
Also I noticed Canaster Vacuum cleaners. What are the advantages of these? What is the purpose of having a canaster? I just don't want to get a habbit of purchasing a vacuum every 1 year because it breaks….
About canister vacs: Canisters are great at cleaning hardwood floors, drapes and hard to reach spots. Most canisters also come with an assortment of tools and attachments for special cleaning jobs. Some may find it awkward because you pull the vacuum from behind.
If you don't want to replace your vacuum every year, go with a Dyson. It is the best purchase you will ever make. I spent hours looking in stores for the perfect vacuum and ended up finding just what I needed, the dyson dc15 animal, online (MUCH lower prices and better info) The suction never wears out, so you won't need to replace it. It is great at getting up hair and for people with allergies.

I bought a bagless one and it was a huge mistake. The damned thing overheats and gets plugged up with dog hair and I hate it. However, my used cheap kenmore I bought at the local thrift store just powers on and on forever.
But out of the brands you mentioned, Hoover is probably the best…at least my mom's Hoovers over the years lasted a long time.
But again, if you have heavy stuff like dog hair to clean, be careful with the bagless…in my experience, anyway, it just didn't do the job.
Oh, yeah, my bagless is a Eureka boss. Looks great, works like crap.

Go with ORECK!
They have the best vacuums. They have the best warranties! In the long run, would you rather by one every 2-3 years or 20-30?

I have a cleaning service.when i started on a tight buget I bought an eurica optima-the green one.I use it everyday 2-3 times.it was $60.after one year it still works great. light weight and convenient.i bought an extra filter.when one gets cloged I spray it with simple green and hose it and let it dry.I use it more than my $1200 Rainbow vac.

Do you have a pet with long hair? If yes, the Dyson Animal (purple) is the only bagless upright that does not clog up. It cleans up all the hair from my German Shepherd, cat dander, etc. I have had it 1 year and it is great. However, it is really expensive–around $500. Otherwise, I would get a Hoover with HEPA bags. You should check out some consumer reviews–like Consumer Reports or go on Amazon.

For store bought brands, Bissell and Hoover are both OK either bagged or bagless models. They are mid-range price wise.
Fantom is a good cheap vacuum, however you'll probably end up replacing it sooner or later.
The best store bought vacuum I've used is the Dyson, but they are a bit spendy.
You can find a refurbished Oreck for around $150 sometimes. I had one in college and although it's a bag model, it was the best vacuum I ever used.
http://www.epinions.com has all sorts of reviews of different vacuum models with some pricing (accuracy of the pricing is questionable sometimes though).

Vacuum cleaners as well as most electrical appliances are NOT designed to last a life time, or even 5 yrs for that matter, however, I suggest that you refer to a Consumer Reports magazine that features test results for bag-less vacuum cleaners.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. I have a Rainbow and it's the best vacuum cleaner I've ever owned. It is bagless, the dirt from the floors goes into a container you put water in and trust me, it pulls things out of my carpet that I didn't know were there. An added bonus is you can add air freshners to the water and it makes your house smell so good after vacuuming.
It is of the cannister type & comes with standard attachments.
I, like you have pets in the house & to me, it is the only way to go.
Rainbow's are expensive though but you might luck up and pick up a used one.

We are also fans of the Dyson units. Easy to use, easy to clean. BUT, you should also get into a better routine of brushing your animals, at least twice a week with a shedding rake, and that will help relieve a lot of the loose hair. Also we use a shed stop additive to our pets water and that made a difference too. We got the dyson at Walmart. WE paid $109, but yesterday we saw it for $86.

My mother in law owns a Dyson and will NEVER EVER go back to anything else. She has to fight my father in law to vacuum sometimes!
Dysons are very expensive, but they have so few moving parts they have to be nearly bullet-proof. Not to mention, they look really cool!
