Dyson vacuum cleaner owners - would you recommend I buy one?

We need a new vacuum cleaner - Which? says buy a Dyson but we are on our 2nd (non Dyson) bagless upright.

The first lasted 3 yrs, the current one has conked after 2 and a half.

The bagged cleaner we had before that lasted 15 years.

I am reluctant to spend £200 on a Dyson as I know a couple of people who used to have one and have told me 'never again'.

Before I take the consumer associations advice - what are your experiences with Dyson cleaners?

All views good bad or indifferent are welcome - also how long has yours lasted?

I have been married for 22 years and we have four children and over the years had lots of pets too. we also have had lots of vacuums.I live in a four level home and have two Dyson's. I love them and we have had them for almost five years now. the stair brush had lost its grip over use and i called the company and they got the info and sent me one free of charge, that is the only problem i have ever had with any of them. you do have to wash the filters, but when you know you are not going to use it, wash it out and leave it over night to completely dry and there you go, done! I would recommend them to anyone looking to buy a new vacuum. maybe i should work for the company! :) LOL!!
they are expensive but i have spend a lot of money over the years on other vacuums and never been this happy, so to me they are worth the money!

Mine has lasted 4 years. I've had 2 belts which my husband replaces.

We've had one for about three years now with no problems. It tackles dog hair well but does need its filters cleaned a lot, maybe we're just dirty lol
It's good but I'm not sure its that much better than other types.

I swear by my Dyson. I had a DC05 cylinder previously. Lasted me 10 years. The one I have at the mo is a DC08 cylinder. Bought it two years ago and used every day. I don't like the uprights. I prefer the ease of connecting different tools to the cylinder and they're easier on stairs. Plus they're lightweight. They all come with a 5 year guarantee on parts. I've had to replace a few parts but there's no argument from the Dyson customer services. They're really helpful. By the way if you shop around especially online you don't have to pay £200. I got mine for £139. With that warranty I think that's a fair price

I have had 2 upright Dyson vacs and they were both rubbish…they were purchased several years apart. The first one broke after 18 months and was never much good , the belts kept breaking. The second one was purchased because someone told me that theirs was really good and I presumed the models had improved. But no they haven't. I found them heavy and hard to use …the belts snap constantly and are a real pain to change and I wouldn't even have one given now! HTH

I have just ditched my Dyson after 2 years. After talking to Dyson owners, making enquiries, and reading lots of reports, I bought a cylinder one. It's the worst household item I have ever had…It's heavy, un manoeuvrable, the wheels slide instead of rolling, and the motor is useless, I have to go over parts of the carpet time and time again to pick anything up. The automatic rewind gave up the ghost ages ago, so now I have to just push the cord back in manually. Never again!!! Absolute waste of money.

Trust me it's not worth the investment. Where I work many people have told me that it does not last longer than the cheaper models and not a whole lot better in general. If I were you, I would by a good vacuum but not more than $150 max. It'll probably last you a couple of years but at least you didn't spend an arm and a leg for it.

My mom bought one and she loves it. She always says when using the vacuum the carpet felt like it was professionally shampooed because it was so soft. But the price is extremely high. I am pretty sure she paid 499 for one. She said she loves the vacuum but the prices are too high. I paid 150 dollars for a vacuum at Wal-Mart and I think it worked just as good and I saved 350 dollars. WIth the money saved I can I could replace it twice for the same price with money to spare.

Love the results but hate using it, it's so heavy to carry up and down the stairs for one of my height challenged stature (and I do work out at the gym regularly). Also the internal metal strengthening piece on the in-hose is so long and rigid that it's really difficult to use in confined spaces without contorting yourself into awkward poses - virtually impossible to use in the footwells of my car. BUT, the results are amazing, so I'm ambivalent towards the thing, I'm pretty sure when it finally goes (it's 5 years old and has had two new belts) I shall probably replace it with the same.

I just got mine for Christmas, and I absolutely love it. I have wanted one for years, my daughter has had one now for 2 years, with no problems. I cannot believe how well this cleans up and picks up pet hair. Christmas morning I vacuumed with my old vacuum, and again with the Dyson, the Dyson picked up so much it was unbelievable. I swear by them, and would most definitely buy another one when this one goes out. Hope this helped

Don't get a Dyson. They are a load of rubbish. We have always brought a Henry Hover, they come with all the attachments which are very easy to change over, the Henry is light enough to carry up and down the stairs and enough suction to pick up all the dust and dirt etc.
We share a house with son and daughter-in-law who had a Dyson, after using it a couple of times we gave up and hovered their side with our Henry. After their Dyson broke, they again brought a smaller one, but it was hopeless and not used, they now have a Henry the same as us.

NO, I bought one 5yrs ago, and it is useless, I wouldn't have another one given to me for nothing!
You can't beat a Kirby, if you can't get one of these, try anything but a Dyson.
